What priority logistics projects have made the St. Louis Regional Freight Highway’s list

The St. Louis Regional Freight Highway has unveiled its priority logistics projects. The selected twenty-seven ideas received over US$8 billion in investment. They are all part of the development of freight infrastructure in eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois.

Trunkline also provided an update on the process. The organisation has successfully completed projects worth more than US$500 million. Several other projects with a total value of US$2.3 billion are underway.

The Freight Committee oversees the implementation and selection of projects. It includes representatives from the Illinois and Missouri departments that oversee transportation activities in the region. In addition, representatives from the logistics and manufacturing sectors participated in selecting priorities.

Review of completed and new projects

The Freightway reported on work completed in 2024. This list included:

  • replacement of the Trade Bridge for US$222 million;
  • improvements to the Interstate Highway for US$278 million;
  • construction of the Chain of Rocks Bridge for US$496;
  • Illinois Route 3 upgrades.

Reconstructing the Interstate Highway has been a major development for the Agency. Along with the Commerce Bridge, this project has been a top priority since 2016.

One key area of upcoming work is the upgrade of I-70. Repairs will begin in early 2025. The construction of a new terminal at St. Louis Lambert Airport is the largest of the anticipated projects. The investment will amount to US$2.8 billion. According to Mary Lamy, the representative of the institution, the success of the project is guaranteed by the joint efforts of all participants.

The regional freight railway pays special attention to cooperation with various state market sectors. Lamy singled out the aerospace industry, which significantly contributes to supply chain development. However, in order to function correctly, adequate infrastructure in the region is necessary. This is the institution’s primary objective.

It is worth noting that St. Louis is the most efficient inland port in the US. Implementing new projects will expand its capabilities and attract new customers.

About the facility

The St. Louis Regional Freight Highway was established in 2014 and initiated by Bi-State Development. The facility’s activities aim to support and develop the region’s logistics industry. Its specialists also monitor and implement infrastructure projects. Each year, the motorway draws up a list of priority tasks and attracts investment for implementation. In this way, critical infrastructure is improved on a regular basis, and the region’s attractiveness is enhanced.
