Emission-free transport as a way to achievement of climate goals

Many developed countries are working to accelerate the achievement of climate goals, and the European states have been particularly successful. The transport sector is one of the main sectors in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. And it requires more effective measures to reduce emissions. For logistics companies, emission-free transport is the best decarbonisation solution. It reduces emissions without lowering productivity.

Three major European transport companies have announced adding new environmentally friendly vehicles to their fleets. Among these companies is DB Schenker from Germany. In 2023, DB Schenker will purchase 150 electric trucks from Volta Trucks in the US. Company plans used the Zero model vehicles in trials that will take place in 18 cities across the European Union. Operators will test emission-free trucks in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and other countries. The manufacturers note the importance of feedback from drivers and operators. Their recommendations will be considered when refining the vehicles and launching new models.

DB Schenker plans to use the new trucks to transport goods from distribution hubs to central cities and their surroundings.

It should be noted that the operator has previously collaborated with car manufacturer Volta. In the autumn of 2022, they tested the company’s prototype in the engineering phase. At that time, the vehicles were moving without cargo, unlike the current ones, which involve the possibility of full use of transport for logistical purposes, including when fully loaded.

DB Schenker is also trying other ways to reduce emissions. For example, the company is already operating a truck with a hydrogen trailer. This is the first model in Germany to be officially approved for real-world use. Hyzon from the US developed the vehicle and equipped it advanced fuel cells. DB Schenker used it on the route between the German city of Cologne and Eupen in Belgium. According to DB Schenker, the company is the first in the country to operate a 40-ton hydrogen truck.

Another carrier that has added green vehicles to its fleet is Sweden’s DFDS. In March 2023, the first 20 Volvo electric trucks arrived here as part of a total order of 125 vehicles. Part of the new vehicles will be used to transport components to Volvo’s assembly plants in Gothenburg.

Logistics operator DSV has decided to focus on hydrogen trucks because they offer a greater range than electric vehicles. The company is already testing four Hyundai vehicles.
