The transpacific route connects Hong Kong and Chicago
CMA CGM Air Cargo has launched a transpacific route carrying new Boeing models. The carrier will operate cargo services between Hong Kong Airport and Chicago.
The first flight on the designated route took place in August 2024. The Boeing 777-200F freighter made a technical stop at Anchorage Airport on its way from Hong Kong. When flying from Chicago, the aircraft will make a stopover in Seoul.
There is currently only one 777-200F on the route, but the company will soon add two more to the fleet. The aircraft will soon be delivered to CMA CGM’s main cargo hub, Paris Airport. The company plans to increase the frequency of its trans-Pacific services. Seven flights per week are expected to be operated in this direction.
It is worth noting that CMA CGM already operates two 777F aircraft. They operate on routes between Europe and China. The aircraft fly five times a week to Hong Kong and four times to Shanghai.
Company director Damien Mazodier stressed the strategic importance of the new route. CMA CGM is strengthening its presence in the air freight market. In addition, the company values the increased coverage of the US. The country is a huge market with a high level of activity. This will allow the carrier to establish itself as a reliable provider of quality services.
Fleet renewal
According to Mazodier, the purchase of the 777 is an investment in long-term company development. It is specifically designed for long-haul flights, including those across the Pacific. In addition, the aircraft offers good productivity due to its high payload capacity. This approach allows the company to optimise costs.
It is worth noting that CMA CGM Air Cargo recently adopted a new strategy based on a partnership with Boeing. In April 2024, the company cancelled its contract with Air France KLM, with which it had previously cooperated. It had previously announced the purchase of two 777-200Fs and four A350Fs from Airbus. However, the company revised its plans and decided to increase its Boeing deliveries.
CMA CGM Air Cargo business overview
CMA CGM Air Cargo is CMA CGM Airlines’ cargo division based at Paris airport. It has been in operation since 2021.
The fleet has developed gradually:
- Initially, it consisted of only 4 Airbus A330-200F aircraft.
- Air Belgium used the transport.
- After a while, the company registered the aircraft and based them in Paris.
- The fleet expanded in 2022 when the airline acquired two 777Fs.
- The company has contracts for four Airbus A350Fs and two 777Fs in the summer of 2022.
CMA CGM Air Cargo pays close attention to aircraft maintenance. In 2024, for example, it will take two Airbus aircraft out of service, reducing the risks of accidents and stoppages.
