Port of Hamburg can now improve truck handling processes

The Port of Hamburg has introduced a new system to optimise processes involving trucks. They will now be processed digitally using a particular application.

Eurogate, the port operator, uses software from the startup company Conroo. It will help optimise terminal operations and increase the combined transport efficiency.

Every day, around 3,500 lorries deliver or collect containers at the port’s terminals. Their handling involves several sequential steps that are labour- and time-intensive. The intelligent Gate Pass application covers all the necessary procedures for receiving trucks. Port staff can identify drivers and record vehicles’ arrival and departure times. The application allows for tracking the vehicles’ movements and avoiding delays.

Overview of the Conroo application

In May 2024, the Port of Hamburg abolished the trucker card. The Gate Pass app now fills this role. Eurogate, the operator, is using it to increase the digitalisation of its operations and improve terminal productivity. The software allows the company to manage a single inland and marine terminals database. In addition, the digital approach helps to improve supply chain mechanisms significantly. This is an essential factor in providing a high level of service to existing and new customers.

Gate Pass features:

  • the application is available on most existing devices;
  • allows capturing and controlling the entire handling process, from driver identification to route creation;
  • drivers receive detailed instructions for each action, which significantly speeds up the process.

The programme also ensures data security and protection for each processing step. For the ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven, the operator plans to integrate slot booking solutions into the new application.

Conroo’s system integrates all parties involved in the logistics process. In this way, a single platform can manage and store data on multiple operations. This approach benefits both drivers and shippers. According to Felix Paul Cerny of Connect, the intelligent approach greatly simplifies processes. The app’s introduction will help the Port of Hamburg enter a new development phase and increase its competitiveness.

Overview of the port’s operations

The Port of Hamburg is Germany’s largest seaport. It ranks third in Europe and 15th in the world in terms of TEU throughput. In addition to container ships, the facility also handles passenger vessels. Hamburg is considered one of the largest European ports for cruise lines. It is also home to shipbuilders and shipyards producing yachts and other marine equipment. For cruise ship services, the port has three terminals capable of accommodating the largest ships.
