EU carriers are now restricted from operating in the UK

EU carriers will work in the UK under new rules

For several years after Britain left the European Union, countries used temporary agreements to regulate their relations. The process of agreeing on trade, logistics, and political issues was extremely difficult. In order to develop a common framework, countries had to make concessions that were disadvantageous to the parties and look for compromises that would allow full activity. In 2023, some agreements expire, among them those that were adopted for the logistics sector. Now EU carriers will not be able to work in the territory of Great Britain, although before their activity was legal.
The changes are due to the entry into force of the agreement between the Kingdom and the European Union, which regulates trade and cooperation between the parties (TCA). According to the document, the UK introduces a list of bans for European transport companies:
– operators who are in the territory of the European Union are not allowed to conduct cabotage when crossing the UK if they are not carrying cargo;
– European carriers are not allowed to carry out combined transportation of goods. This refers to certain types of intermodal transportation when goods are placed in a single cargo unit or vehicle while using 2 or more types of vehicles;
– EU-registered companies are not allowed to pick up goods in the UK for onward shipment to a non-EU member state. In this case, we are talking about triangular transportation.

The main reason for such innovations on the part of the Kingdom was the fact that the agreement adopted by the countries does not contain similar rights for the activities of British transport companies in the EU. It should be noted that European operators can continue to use triangular transportation, but to do so they must obtain permission from a special commission made up of representatives of the ministries of transport of EU countries. This permission also allows British transport companies to carry out this kind of transport between European countries and those that are not part of the community.
In addition to the TCA, the EU has introduced a number of other regulations since the beginning of 2023. For example, the European ADR Convention is reviewed every 2 years and has just been updated in 2023. The convention regulates the rules for the transport and storage of dangerous goods. Companies that transport such goods must now hire a safety consultant. In addition, the vehicle must be equipped with automatic fire extinguishers. The new regulations also improve the system for estimating the weight of hazardous waste, taking into account different types of packaging. At the same time, all necessary information about the transported substance, its average density, and the nominal volume of the package must be included in the cargo.
