A new logistics park at BGY Airport will increase and simplify freight transport operations
A new state-of-the-art logistics park has opened at BGY Airport in Bergamo. It covers an area of 41,000 square metres, including parking and access roads. The investment cost of the project was approximately €52 million.
Dario Nanna of BGY noted that the hub has made it possible to separate the implementation of transport services. The park is designed to serve cargo airlines, while the airport focuses on passenger airlines. The logistics centre has its apron, separate access road and taxiway. In simple terms, BGY is now two airports connected by a single runway.
Some 3.4% of Italy’s exports come from the province of Bergamo. The region ranks 5th in terms of value of shipments after Milan, Vicenza, Turin and Brescia. For 30 years, BGY was DHL’s main hub in the country. Now, it has switched to Malpensa, while Bergamo is home to UPS. Meanwhile, the airport is looking to expand its logistics activities. The company hopes that the new fleet will attract significant customers. BGY offers a modern cargo infrastructure that will meet the needs of the export sector.
Advantages of Bergamo Airport
It is worth noting that transport services are among the most in-demand in the region. Bergamo exports a wide range of goods, including:
- mechanical products;
- automobiles;
- chemical products;
- electrical appliances;
- textiles;
- food products.
This market volume still lags behind Milan’s exports. At the same time, the Bergamo hub is only an hour away, opening up new opportunities for companies. BGY pays particular attention to the quality of its services. The company has recruited experienced specialists for the new logistics park. One of them is Massimo Raccasecca, former director of Brescia airport. He has assembled a professional team to develop the project.
The new hub will give Bergamo a competitive advantage in the region. BGY is the only airport in northern Italy with modern infrastructure. It has all the necessary conditions to receive and send freight to different countries.
Characteristics of BGY:
- cooperates with 21 airlines;
- provides services on 145 routes;
- offers flights to 40 countries;
- popular destinations in Bergamo include Germany, Spain, the UK, China, the Netherlands and others.
Although the airport has not yet reached Milan’s volumes, it aims to do so. In 2022, BGY handled 20.8 thousand tonnes of freight. At the same time, in Milan, the figure reached 721.3 thousand tonnes. In total, about 1.108 million tonnes of cargo passed through all air terminals in Italy during the period.
