Port of Riga increased the volume of transported cargo by 9.4%

The Port of Riga has reported on its performance in 2022. During the year, the volume of transported cargo increased by 9.4% and amounted to about 23.5 million tons. Bulk goods were the most important. During the year, 14.5 million tons of cargo passed through the port, almost 21% more than in 2021. Transshipment of general cargo increased by 5% to 7.5 million tons. About 1.5 million tons of bulk goods were handled, which is more than 35% less than in 2021.
The Port of Riga handled almost 461 thousand TEUs, which is 10.8% more than in the past. About 4.7 million tons of containerized cargo passed through the terminals, the growth, in this case, is about 10%. The volume of coal transported through the port increased almost 5 times – up to 5.1 million tons. About 2.7 million tons of timber passed through the port during the year, which is an increase of 3%. The volume of grain handling decreased by 5% – to 2.6 million tons. A decrease of almost 38% was observed in the sector of oil products. Metals showed the largest decrease, as their transshipment fell by 74% in comparison with the previous period and amounted to about 89,000 tons. Iron ore transshipment in the port increased by 17% – to 954.7 thousand tons.

The Port of Riga specializes mainly in imports, the area of the facility is 1,962 hectares, and the water area is 6,348 hectares. Export cargoes are handled by other Latvian ports, including the Port of Liepaja. Last year, the volume of iron and manganese ores handled in Liepaja port increased by 11.5 times and amounted to 59 thousand tons. 
At the same time, the handling of other types of metals in Liepaja Port decreased by about 43% – to 9.5 thousand tons. Handling of ferrous metals decreased by 20% to 3 thousand tons. At the same time, the handling of non-ferrous metals increased by 100% and reached over 129 thousand tons. Similar dynamics are observed in the sector of iron alloys – with 100% growth their volume was almost 18 thousand tons. Handling of grain and cereals increased by 11%, with a total of just over 3 million tons passing through the port. There was also a slight increase in the volume of construction materials, which totaled 780 thousand tons.
The total volume of cargo handled last year was 7.6 million tons, and according to this index, the port of Riga was ahead of Liepaja.
