AI and freight transportation costs: a study

Artificial intelligence simplifies many areas of human activity. The introduction of AI systems is yielding tangible results and driving increased demand from businesses. One example is the logistics industry, where innovations are helping reduce freight costs.

Fraunhofer ISI, Europe’s largest research agency, conducted an analysis of the implementation and use of intelligent systems. The study used the logistics company Einride as an example. The study’s results were as follows:

  • planning transport processes using AI helps to reduce overall costs by 13%;
  • electric trucks were filled to 85% of their payload capacity.
  • implementing such systems stimulates electrification;
  • AI helps to optimize transportation and increase overall productivity.

The study analyzed 38,000 deliveries made by 200 vehicles. The AI solution took over the planning of transport operations for the German supermarket chain REWE. To analyze efficiency, the agency used information about product transportation in the Berlin area. The study compared the productivity of different transportation types. In one case, diesel trucks were used; in the other, electric trucks were used. Einride’s Planning AI handled route planning for the latter.

Study conclusions

The AI system assisted in carrying 85% of the payload for electric transport. It accounted for 54% of the total mileage. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach compared to the 1:1 model. In the latter case, the payload was 57%, and the mileage was 32%.

In terms of costs, the 1:1 replacement saved only 3%. However, government subsidies, which covered capital costs, played an important role.

The study demonstrated the value of implementing AI systems to optimize logistics operations. Analysts concluded that software for planning integration plays an important role in cost optimization. Route development and operational organization that takes charging into account demonstrated better efficiency than increasing battery capacity.

Fast 150 kW chargers are particularly significant for cost optimization. The company installed these chargers at loading sites to reduce costs. With AI planning, transportation became less dependent on the chargers while still achieving a high level of electrification. Analysts concluded that implementing AI solutions for planning helps maintain process stability. This is especially important in a volatile market.

Fabian Nevris from REWE emphasized the importance of reducing costs for businesses. The company intends to expand its use of intelligent systems to optimize logistics processes. In addition, REWE will work towards the electrification and modernization of its vehicle fleet.
