The new Scania G38 gearbox improves truck productivity
New truck innovations were on show at the Elmia trade fair in Switzerland. Among them is the Scania G38 gearbox, which will enhance the company’s tractor efficiency.
The updated version of the G38 will be used for Scania’s V8 engine. Its specifications speak for themselves:
- 16-litre displacement;
- it delivers 770 hp;
- 3,700 Nm of torque.
Combining an advanced gearbox with a powerful engine results in excellent vehicle performance. This combination contributes to economical fuel consumption and a smooth drive. In addition, the truck starts easily, even under maximum load.
Novelty features
The present version of the gearbox is an improved version of the previous ones. The engineers have focused on functionality and productivity. The G38 advantages:
- develops torque up to 3,800 Nm without increasing the weight and dimensions of the truck;
- contributes to fuel economy by reducing friction;
- allows the use of faster rear axle transmissions;
- maintains a high level of starting performance.
It is worth noting that the G38 version introduced is the latest update to the G-series. Scania first launched it in 2019 as a component for high-torque engines. The box has become an indispensable companion for V8 engines. The latest version improves essential performance by increasing torque to 3,800 Nm. At the same time, the box dimensions remain unchanged from previous iterations.
According to engineer Mats Henriksson, the Scania team achieved this result by using high-quality steel. The material can withstand extreme loads without the risk of deformation. In addition, the team used an advanced polishing process for the teeth, which increased their strength and durability. The new box is also equipped with a large number of oil ducts, which improve access to the system’s main components.
The box’s weight has been reduced by approximately 60kg by using aluminium for the housing. The G38 is shorter than Scania’s GRSO926 series, the company’s most popular product.
It also has a lower operating noise level, which is important in view of stricter regulations for commercial vehicles. Gear shifting is pneumatic. The engineers have also found a way to reduce the number of synchronisations, freeing up space for wide gears.
The transmission is ideal for heavy-duty vehicles where maximum power is important. With the G38, these tractors will be able to deliver maximum productivity and economy simultaneously, which is essential in today’s market.
