The electric truck battery has a range of 1.5 million kilometres

Swedish car manufacturer Scania has partnered with Northvolt to develop a new battery for electric trucks. Its main advantage is performance, with a battery life of 1.5 million kilometres.

Work on the new product began in 2017 when the companies joined forces to produce a powerful battery designed for heavy-duty vehicles. The collaboration between Scania and Northvolt has resulted in a battery capable of covering 1.5 million kilometres without replacement, equivalent to a diesel engine’s service life.

The new batteries are manufactured at the Northvolt plant in Sweden. Scania is also planning to launch its own production. The facility should be operational by the end of 2023. Here, the components get assembled into blocks and then sent to electric truck production facilities.

The company focused on long service life and reduced operating costs when designing the battery. In addition to the stated characteristics, the batteries have a high capacity. The 157 Ah cell has a prismatic shape. The nominal cell voltage is 3.6V. The battery, designed for use in Scania electric trucks, has passed numerous tests.

The Scania P 25 electric truck

It is worth noting that the Swedish manufacturer is one of the leaders in producing electric heavy-duty vehicles. In April 2023, the company unveiled the P 25 electric truck, the first of its kind in the world.

The vehicle’s power output is 230 kWh. The model is already in use by the German company ARS Altmann, a long-standing partner of Scania. Drivers working with the new truck note that the machine is more accessible to drive than its diesel counterparts. The truck has a superstructure and a Kässbohrer trailer, making loading and unloading easier. The vehicle can carry up to 8 cars. It weighs 42 tonnes, the maximum permissible weight for transport in Germany. A full charge takes less than 90 minutes at 130 kWh. Thus, the vehicle can be charged during unloading or loading, saving time and reducing downtime.

Scania is one of the few companies with a long history of achieving zero emissions. Moreover, the manufacturer also encourages customers to switch to eco-friendly transport. It provides them with comfortable and functional vehicles and solutions to develop the appropriate infrastructure. In addition, Scania offers its customers a wide range of services to facilitate the transition to sustainable transport.
